‘For the Lamb at the centre of the throne will be their shepherd; he will lead them to springs of living water. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.’
(Revelation 7:17)
What images come to mind when you hear the word ‘comfort’? Perhaps a soft, fluffy clean blanket. It could be a sofa or chair well cushioned. ‘Comfort food’ might be warm buttered toast or hot chicken noodle soup. Physical comfort is very important to all of us.
Emotional comfort is also extremely important; arms of love when tragedy strikes; kind words expressed, showing people care; someone just sitting beside us when no words or actions can really help. But more than anything, spiritual comfort is crucial. This can come from reading God’s Word, through hearing a sermon, or by being the recipient of love expressed by a servant of God.
Comfort. Rest for our weary soul. It comes when Jesus offers us rest in Him.
‘Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.‘ (Matthew 11:28, 29)
We are not promised an easy life or that everything would be easy-going. But Jesus did say if we take his yoke upon ourselves, experiencing life with him, the yoke shared together would then be easy. True comfort that everything will be ours; yes, even in the midst of chaos.
One day Jesus will come again, taking us to be with him forever. Eternal comfort. And here is the good news: eternal life, for those who believe in the Lord, has already begun!
